Previous Guildford College student donates essential site surveying equipment

On Wednesday 11 May, Guildford College’s Construction department were kindly donated some ex-local authority site surveying equipment by a previous student of the College.

The equipment, which included a theodolite (used to measure the height of contours) and an electronic distance meter, are essential tools used in site surveying and will prove invaluable in teaching our students the skills and knowledge needed to progress onto a career inConstruction or Civil Engineering.

Mark Webb, a previous Civil Engineering student from Guildford College and current Chief Executive of Elmbridge Building Control Services Limited, commented: “I started my Building Control career with Elmbridge Borough Council in 1979 and as part of my training I was required to obtain an ONC and HNC in Construction, these courses were undertaken at Guildford College. More recently I undertook a City and Guilds course in Electrical Installation again at Guildford College. I’m happy to say that I passed all of the courses due, in no small part, to the quality of the teaching staff at your college. So, as you can see, Guildford College helped me take the first steps in my career. When we realised that we had surveying equipment that was surplus to our requirements the whole of the Building Control team agreed that donating it to your College was the only thing that made sense, it was an opportunity to give a little something back to a College that has given many Building Control Surveyors so much”.

Curriculum Leader, Paul Harry-Mitchell, said: “We are very pleased and honoured to know a past student has not only succeeded in their chosen career, which he trained and studied for, but also chose his former institute of learning to receive these valuable items”.
